On her way through the parking lot, Theresa bumped into an old friend.
âHola, Theresa. I have not seen you in a long while. ¿Cómo estás?â
âIâm fine,â Natalia replied. âBusy, but fine. How are you?â
âBien. How did you do on the machines today? Are you a big winner?â
âI am sorry to say I have not had much luck in quite a while. And you?â
âNo. My luck has vanished, but did you hear about Lucia?â Natalia spoke of a mutual friend. âShe won big three times on one visit last month, and then won the car! SÃ, the red convertible just inside the entryway. Can you believe it? I havenât seen her since or I would tease her. Instead, I just come and lose.â Despite her bad luck, Natalia smiled.
Theresa grinned as well. Patting her friendâs shoulder, she laughed and said, âI havenât seen Lucia either, but when I do, Iâll have to ask her to share the luck. But for now, I really must hurry home. Bye, Natalia.â
Without another word, Theresa proceeded toward her car. Though she enjoyed chatting with her friend, she didnât dare stop again. If she didnât hurry, she would be late, and that would mean trouble, big trouble.
Last year she developed a problem with the casino. She was stopping every day after work, and sometimes the time got away from her. Once, she actually forgot to pick Ricky up from school. Diego was furious when the school called, and he had to take off from work to pick him up. When she finally arrived home, she told Diego she had car trouble and that a friend from work had to jump her battery. That calmed him down.
However, when Diego found out that Theresa had spent nearly half their savings, he could not be calmed. She couldnât think of any logical explanation, so she told him the truth. Their money had gone to the slot machines. Diego looked ready to explode. He left that night and didnât return until the next morning. That was when he gave Theresa an ultimatum.
âTheresa, I love you but I cannot live with lies,â Diego explained that morning. âYou must promise not to lie to me again and pledge not to return to the casino. I worry because you have a problem and need to stay away from that place. If you can make me those vows, I can forgive you.â
Theresa agreed to the conditions, and she meant to keep them. It was just so hard!
It wasnât all bad. She did slow down on her gambling. Now she only visited the casino once a week, on Fridays. Diego thought she was at a meeting of Gamblers Anonymous. He respected her privacy and rarely asked about the meetings, so at least she didnât have to tell more lies. As long as she was careful and avoided blowing it like last time, she figured Diego wouldn't really mind. After all, it was her money, too, and she was always mindful not to lose too much. Nobody was hurt.
